Movements, Newcastle upon Tyne

Commissioned as part of Newcastle City Council’s £60m Re-Newcastle transport investment programme, we delivered a large-scale temporary floor artwork reclaiming former carriageway for public use.

Spanning 350m², the intervention transformed a traffic-dominated space into a civic destination, supporting pedestrian movement, social interaction, and active travel. The visual language draws on dazzle camouflage, a reference to the city’s shipbuilding heritage, layered with contemporary graphic motifs to introduce rhythm and orientation at ground level.

The installation formed part of a broader public realm strategy accompanying major road redesign, new crossings, seating areas, and improved public transport routes. Alongside the artwork, we led consultation and engagement activity to inform campaign messaging and support behavioural change as Newcastle introduced its Clean Air Zone.

The project demonstrates how temporary public art can activate infrastructure, shift perception, and support long-term urban transformation.
