Nine 260, Newcastle upon Tyne

Commissioned by Newcastle City Council and News UK, this permanent mural celebrates the football legacy of Alan Shearer while honouring the pride and identity of Newcastle.

The work marks Shearer’s record-breaking Premier League career, translating both personal narrative and collective memory into a monumental public artwork.

The visual concept draws on the RMS Mauretania - a dazzle-camouflaged ship built in Wallsend in the same year Shearer’s childhood football club was founded. The vessel is reimagined as a dynamic flock of magpies, merging football heritage with the region’s industrial and shipbuilding past.

By connecting sporting achievement with maritime history, the mural situates Shearer’s story within the wider narrative of the North East, celebrating resilience, loyalty, and place.
