St Hilda’s Colliery

A Love Supreme is a heritage memorial installation to commemorate the 180th anniversary of the mining tragedy at St Hilda Colliery in South Shields following an explosion deep underground.

Commissioned by Tyne and Wear Building Preservation Trust, the installation featured four appliquéd modern interpretations on the traditional miners banner, as well as a projection-mapped animation that brought the historic mine shaft back to life.

The work deals with the motion associated with industry - the directional movement, the grind of the work, the fire and the canary to signify the miners lost.
